This event will discuss the implications of two of the main evolutions in the Internet ecosystem over the past 15 years, namely the globalization of the Internet as usage and content spread around the world, and the enormous increase in overall Internet traffic resulting from ever richer content and applications.
In particular, it describes in detail how Internet interconnection arrangements evolved in response to these trends, and explains in particular how Internet Exchange Points have helped to promote efficient interconnection between all of the players in the Internet ecosystem. The talk will highlight the challenges and opportunities for emerging markets, with a brief case study of advances in Kenya. Finally, we will contrast the commercial responses to changes to globalization with attempts by certain multilaterals to transpose telecoms regulations onto the Internet.
