Mining staff of the Oil, Gas, and Mining Policy Division form the technical arm of the World Bank Group supporting governments in the responsible development of a respective countries' mineral resources. It is staffed by mining and industry sector experts with skills in:

The strategy underlying the assistance provided by the division emphasizes the need for government policies that maximize the positive impact which the minerals sector can have on the overall economic development as well as on poverty reduction. Specific projects currently underway within the mining department focus on:
- Legal and fiscal frameworks to attract private mining investment
- Social and environmental frameworks for responsible mining
- Reform and capacity building for government agencies and ministries
- Privatization of parastatal mining and industrial enterprises
- Closure of unprofitable mines
- Regularization of small-scale and artisanal mining
- Reform and restructuring of the coal sector
- Modern geological databases
- Partnerships with important stakeholders
