Poverty Indicators - Tracking the Development Impact of EI Projects

The World Bank Group (WBG) is developing a systematic approach to tracking the development and poverty impacts of its projects in extractive industries. It will use a set of indicators to measure the potential contribution and impact of projects to help better describe the expected development impact of of projects it supports. Such analysis can help the WBG come to a view as to whether and how projects do benefit communities and whether they should be supported. If tracked over time, they can help illustrate the success or not of projects. In some circumstances, it will be appropriate to measure the ultimate impacts on affected communities' welfare in terms of more fundamental measures of poverty. Base line studies can be an important component of assessing of this, and may be very useful in assisting investors and communities engage in consultation about the project and, for example, the design of community programs.
