Zambia Commits to the EITI

Zambia has now been added to the growing list of countries that have committed to implementing the EITI. Hon. Kalambo Mwansa, Minister of Mines and Minerals Development announced the intention at a launch workshop On July 15-16, 2008 in Lusaka. He said that, as a result, the government will strengthen transparency in the use of revenue from the mining sector.

“The value attached to transparency by the Government explains its intentions to adopt this initiative. The Government decided to follow 23 other countries worldwide that have adopted and are implementing the EITI because we believe that transparency is key,” Dr. Mwansu said.

World Bank country manager, Kapil Kapoor, indicated that the launch was the first step
in promoting transparency and accountability in the use of public resources from the extractive industries.

“Our experience from the countries that implemented the EITI has shown that managing revenues from extractive industries has been very challenging.” he said.

The Zambia Ministry of Mines and Minerals Development and the World Bank sponsored the workshop. Stakeholder representatives from government, civil society, mining companies and Chambers of Mines, Central Bank, Parliament, and the media attended. The event built on the Zambia Scoping Study Report issued by the World Bank at the request of the government.
