The workshop focused on learning and exchange of strategies and experiences in connecting grassroots entrepreneurs and producer organizations to global resources and markets. It brought together leading practitioners from grassroots groups, NGOs, foundations, the private sector, and multilateral organizations.
This workshop built on learning from four previous international meetings sponsored by the World Bank that focused on Global Coalitions for Voices of the Poor. These meetings examined ways to connect the knowledge, ideas, leadership, and resources of poor people at the local level to the larger global community. The Self Employed Women's Association (SEWA) of India hosted the most recent meeting in March 2002. This roundtable, titled "Global Issues, Local Insights," focused on listening to the voices of poor self-employed women.
The goals of the workshop were: (1) to promote information sharing and dialogue across regions and experiences; (2) to help build a knowledge base on different channels grassroots entrepreneurs and producer groups are using to scale up and access the global marketplace; and (3) to support the development of a proposal to establish a fund for systematic support of poor people's entrepreneurship and organizations.
