The impact of skilled migration in the countries of origin can have positive effects through remittances and possible knowledge gain - through return migration - but also negative effects through brain drain. There could be a brain waste because skilled immigrants could get worse jobs in comparison to natives with similar skills, but there could be a brain gain because there is an increase in demand for education since it is a way to augment the probability of emigrate and earn a higher income. This seminar will discuss: (i) how to assess the levels of skilled migration and their impact in service delivery such as health and education, and (ii) what are possible policy implications of skilled migration in productivity, labor market and education in developing countries. For background information about brain drain issues check this link on ongoing research work on Brain Drain- International and Migration and Development-.

This seminar aims to facilitate the dialogue between the analytical and research advances on migration, and the policy and operational dialogue on this increasingly important issue.
