The impact of international remittances in labor market indicators has been little researched in the recipient countries. This issue is relevant in countries like Jamaica where the remittances represent about 20 percent of GDP. This seminar will discuss for the Jamaican case: i) the evidence on the labor supply response to international remittances; ii) what are the broad macroeconomic effects of a reduction in the labor supply due to increase in the remittances, particularly in the external sector through the changes in the exchange rate; and iii) what are the emerging policy recommendations, especially in the fiscal area, to address the impact of remittances on labor supply .
This seminar series aims to facilitate the dialogue between the analytical and research advances on migration, and the policy and operational dialogue on this increasingly important issue.
