The economic analysis of migration and its impact on development outcomes has been constrained by the limited information about the migrants themselves. This seminar will discuss operational approaches for surveying households that have migrants abroad testing the different methods amongst Japanese-Brazilian families that send migrants to Japan. The survey methods to be discussed are: 1) Households selected randomly from door to door listing using the Brazilian census; 2) A snowball survey using Nikkei community groups; and 3) An intercept point collected at Nikkei community gathering (ethnicity grocery stores, sports clubs, etc). The presentation will address the operational advantages and disadvantages of these three methods in analyzing the migrants' characteristics, the level of remittances received, and the incidence of return migration.
This seminar series aims to facilitate the dialogue between the analytical and research advances on migration, and the policy and operational dialogue on this increasingly important issue.
