Begins:   Oct 04, 2011 02:15
Ends:   Oct 04, 2011

The Third Palestinian NGO Project has made a significant difference in the area of health, education, agriculture and civic participation for the people in Gaza. The Project has successfully provided several types of grants, capacity building and technical assistance to NGOs. In addition, its role in delivering services has been essential for the communities in the area.

The NGO III project benefited approximately 70% of NGOs in Gaza and was able to improve the quality of their social services. Over 75% of the direct beneficiaries included youth, senior citizens, women and children,” said Dina Abu Ghaida, Program Manager of the World Bank.

On October 4, 2011, a ceremonial exhibition was dedicated to the achievement of NGOs in Gaza, which follows the June 2011 event in Ramallah. Organized by the World Bank, NGO Development Center (NDC) and the Welfare Association, the event showcased the project’s impact over the past four years.  The NGO representatives shared their successes and challenges in working towards their project goals, assisting their beneficiaries and improving the quality of their services.

An audience of over 150 participants witnessed a mini-showcase of products and services of the 24 participating NGOs: promoting the interest of the poor, providing basic social services and creating job opportunities. The face-to-face interaction between the NGOs and the audience generated a productive dialogue and exchange of knowledge on a range of issues including, healthcare, education, environment, children and youth, culture, arts and craft and agriculture.

Ala’ Ghalayini, NGO Development Center (NDC) Gaza Program Manager, explained that the project has helped the neediest segments of the society by providing financial assistance to civil society institutions and strengthening the NGO sector. Furthermore, Fadi Al-Hindy, Director of the Welfare Association in Gaza, explained that NDC was a source of pride for the Welfare Association, as its establishment was aimed at building the capacity of civil society institutions.

Although the USD13 million World Bank support to Palestinian NGOs has closed, the World Bank is supporting a fourth Palestinian NGO project of USD8 million. In collaboration with the Agence Française de Développement (AFD), the fourth project will build and expand on the successes of the previous projects.
