Sponsors: Poverty Reduction Group and Social Protection Sector, The World Bank.
There is a general consensus that the availability of employment opportunities and their characteristics constitute an essential transmission channel from growth to poverty reduction. However, our understanding of the relative importance of the various links and the way they operate remains limited, especially for low income countries. This conference will take stock of existing knowledge.
The objectives of the one day conference are:
-
To take stock of what we know about employment, growth and poverty in general and how to apply this to low income countries.
-
To identify ways forward for analytical and advisory work
The conference will contain five sessions on the following topics:
-
Employment in low income countries: beyond labor market segmentation
-
Good jobs, bad jobs and economic performance
-
The role of labor mobility for economic performance
-
Self-employment and Informality: engines of growth?
-
Establishment and firm dynamics: implications for growth and employment
