Impact Evaluation of East Africa: Taking Stock

Blue arrow Evaluations by sector
Blue arrow Evaluations by country

This collection is not intended to be a comprehensive catalogue of impact evaluations conducted at the Bank; rather it highlights some of the recently completed and ongoing impact evaluation initiatives.

Development agencies are under increasing pressure to improve the performance of development assistance and provide examples of development impact. In response to this concern, the World Bank has strengthened efforts to assess the impact of interventions on the poor.

Several units at the World Bank conduct impact evaluations. Regional departments perform selected impact evaluations of their lending programs according to country demand and learning needs. Sectoral and thematic networks also conduct impact evaluations of key programs and projects. In addition, the World Bank Research Group carries out impact evaluations either as part of the Bank's research agenda or by providing support to the regional and sectoral units.

Independent evaluation is provided by the Operations Evaluation Department (OED). In these reports, OED assisted by agencies in borrower countries, takes a second look at projects five to eight years after the close of loan disbursements and assess the economic worth of projects and the long-term effects on people and the environment.
