April  23, 2008
2:00 pm - 5:00 pm

Description: Migration and remittances issues are increasingly raised in policy dialogue and by both sending and receiving countries. This workshop gives guidelines on how to incorporate these concerns into the Bank’s analytical and operational work and provides practical examples on how to structure the links between migration, remittances and development objectives across analytical products  (Country Economic Memorandums, Poverty Assessments, PRSP) and lending activities (social protection, rural development).

The workshop will begin with a short conceptual framework to identify the key transmission channels between development and migration to then discuss specific analytical and policy topics:

  • Migration and Remittances: Development Linkages;
  • Poverty Analysis and Policy: Analytical Challenges and Issues for Operations (PRSP);
  • Human Development and Labor Policy Issues: Evidence and Operational Issues;
  • Remittances and Policy Challenges: Financial Sector and Macro Policies.

Learning Objectives: At the end of this workshop, participants will have a better understanding of the basic analytical tools in migration and development, and the linkages between these and the operational work.

Speakers:

  • David McKenzie (Senior Economist, DECRG)
  • Dilip K. Ratha (Senior Economist, DECPG)
  • Edmundo Murrugarra  (Senior Economist, PRMPR)
  • Marcin Jan Sasin (Economist, PRMPR)
