Moving Out of Poverty Study Workshop (July 2003)

What does it take to move out of poverty? How do democracy and national governance systems impact poor people’s experiences of economic freedom and choice?

A new global research project is seeking to target a section of the population who can provide useful insights into these questions: those who were once poor and have moved out of and stayed out of poverty. In efforts to devise a methodology for what is envisioned as a 10 to 15-country study on mobility, freedom, power, and aspirations of poor people, experts gathered in July for a workshop titled, Moving Out of Poverty: Understanding Growth and Freedom from the Bottom Up.

The two and a half day event, held at World Bank headquarters, gathered economists, political scientists, anthropologists, and social scientists to provide feedback and inputs into the new study, which will serve as a successor to Voices of the Poor.
