What does it take to move out of poverty? How do democracy and national governance systems impact poor people’s experiences of economic freedom and choice? A new global research project is seeking to target a section of the population who can provide useful insights into these questions: those who were once poor and have moved out of and stayed out of poverty. In efforts to devise a methodology for what is envisioned as a 10 to 15-country study on mobility, freedom, power, and aspirations of poor people, experts gathered in July for a workshop titled, Moving Out of Poverty: Understanding Growth and Freedom from the Bottom Up. The two and a half day event, held at World Bank headquarters, gathered economists, political scientists, anthropologists, and social scientists to provide feedback and inputs into the new study, which will serve as a successor to Voices of the Poor. - Agenda (27kb PDF)
