Poverty analysis  is one of the principle steps in formulating a poverty reduction strategy. It includes the following activities:

  • Overview: briefly discusses the different dimensions of poverty and its measurement; presents trends in poverty and the Millennium Development Goals over time; and discusses the actions required to fight poverty.
  • Measuring poverty: presents the methodology used for the measurement of poverty, inequality and vulnerability —construction of a consumption/income aggregate, poverty lines and indicators; presents some of the issues which typically arise; and reviews the type of measurement which can be undertaken with various data sources.
  • Analyzing poverty: describes the different approaches to the analysis of poverty, inequality, vulnerability, and their determinants; covers tools ranging from simple tabulations, to regression analysis, and to techniques for the comparison of poverty over time or across areas.
  • Poverty Mapping: gives an overview of poverty maps and their applications; describes the main types of maps, including small area estimation maps, and associated techniques and software; and presents resources and examples of policy applications in many countries.
