The second Regional Conference on Poverty Reduction Strategies for countries from the East Asia and Pacific Region was held in Phnom Penh, Cambodia, October 16-18, 2003. It follows on from the first Regional Conference on Poverty Reduction Strategies, held in Hanoi, Vietnam, December 4-6, 2001, as well building on the results of the recent workshop on Gender and Poverty Reduction Strategies held in Siem Reap, September 17-18, 2003.
The objectives of the conference were to: | |
Review and exchange experiences on the development of poverty reduction strategies in East Asian countries; Identify obstacles and challenges countries face in designing and implementing their strategies; and Derive lessons to help formulate a shared view of next steps for each country and for replication in other developing countries.
The Conference was attended by over 200 participants. Delegates were sent from Cambodia, Indonesia, Lao PDR, Mongolia, Timor-Leste, and Vietnam, representing the government, parliament, civil society organisations, academic research institutions and the private sector. Observers also attended from Bangladesh, Bhutan, Nepal, Papua New Guinea and Sri Lanka to share their experiences as well as learn from the East Asian countries.

The conference was jointly organized by the Asian Development Bank, the International Monetary Fund, the United Nations Development Programme, and theWorld Bank. In addition, it was well attended by representatives of other external partners.
