Quantitative Poverty Diagnostic Tools for Poverty Reduction Strategies

A fundamental input to poverty reduction strategies is accurate and timely data on poverty levels, the characteristics of the poor, their sources of livelihood, their access to services and the effectiveness of programs. How to generate such data is the focus of this course and its objectives are to provide staff with a detailed overview of the key phases and concepts of multi-topic household survey data collection. The course will draw heavily on the Bank's twenty years of experience with Living Standards Measurement Study surveys (LSMS) and Integrated Surveys (IS). The LSMS/IS approach is designed to produce rich data sets on small national samples with high standards of quality control. On completing the course the participants should be familiar with the issues and procedures involved in collecting household survey data, the uses of data pertinent to Bank work, and the issues related to the LSMS and other multi-topic surveys. This should better enable course participants to help client countries set up poverty monitoring and evaluation tools and systems.
