Transparency and Development Effectiveness

Increasing focus on governance and accountability in the work of international aid agencies has brought concerns of transparency and access to information to the center of governance reforms. Recent developments in the strategic context of the Bank’s work and governance agenda have also highlighted concerns of access to public information and transparency as critical to better governance. Furthermore, public institutions in developing countries are faced with increasing pressure to make government more transparent and accountable. Access to information is a key component in fostering a transparent and accountable system and serves vital tool for promoting ‘open governance’. As such, the right to information is not only essential for an open society but is a key weapon in the fight against poverty and in accelerating human development.
