International Conference on Governance Accountability in Social Sector Decentralization

Date: February 18-19, 2004

Description: Despite the extensive global experience in the devolution and decentralization of social services, little is known about how to improve governance and strengthen accountability, enhance equity and efficiency, and improve service quality. The purpose of this conference is to disseminate research findings on social sector decentralization and provide a venue to discuss country experiences from different regions. Discussion will be informed by evaluation research and policy analysis, including research supported by the PREM network. CD-ROMS with research papers, World Bank documents, and other relevant material will be provided at the event.

The audience for this conference includes developing country officials, staff of the World Bank and other donors, and researchers and analysts of health and education decentralization. The format of the conference is brief presentations followed by debate and discussion. Some sessions will feature concurrent presentations organized by sector. This Conference is being sponsored by the World Bank’s PREM Decentralization Thematic Group, and Human Development Network, with financial support of a Dutch Trust Fund.
