The World Bank is undertaking a Social and Conflict Analysis of the Nigerian Niger Delta.  A fuller understanding of the complex social and economic situation will guide the development of the institution’s policy and programs in the Delta region in the coming years.  As a first step, a one-day workshop, on April 5, 2007, will bring together experts on the Delta and World Bank staff to discuss the key issues facing the Delta and to map possible solutions.

Objectives of the workshop:

  1. To identify the main challenges facing the Delta and to discuss their linkages;
  2. To identify key issues for further exploration; and,
  3. To identify policy and program actions and recommend how key stakeholders (the government, development partners, oil companies, and in particular the World Bank) might respond to these challenges.

The Expert Panel

  • Professor Michael Watts, Director, Center for African Studies, UCLA, Berkeley
  • Precious Omuku, Shell International
  • Professor Peter Lewis, Director, African Studies Program, SAIS, Johns Hopkins
  • Sola Omole, General Manager, Public Affairs, Chevron
  • Deirdre La Pin, former Head of Community Development, Shell PDC, Nigeria
  • Aaron Padilla, Senior Consultant, Environmental Resources Management

Participation at the workshop is by invitation only. The workshop is sponsored by the Social Development Department in collaboration with the Africa Conflict and Social Development Unit and the Nigeria Country Team.
