Social Development Department Presents

The Security Implications of Climate Change

BBL    n    October 25, 2007    n    12:30 to 2:00 p.m    n    MC13-121

SDV, in collaboration with the Environment Department, is starting a program of work on the Social Dimensions of Climate Change.  This will include components of work looking at social impacts and vulnerability, conflict and migration.  The International Peace Research Institute, Oslo, will be undertaking two studies.  One will review available evidence on linkages between climate change and violent conflict, with a focus on civil conflict.  The second will review available evidence on and analysis on climate change as a driver of large-scale migration and consider the implications for policy.  This BBL will, firstly, present a brief overview of the history of research on environment and armed conflict, and the implications of this for current debates on climate change. Then, staff engaged in the two studies will present initial ideas on the framework and methodology for the forthcoming work, with a view to getting commentary and ideas from Bank staff.  The presenters will be:

  • Nils Petter Gleditsch is Research Professor at the Centre for the Study of Civil War at PRIO. He is a leading authority on environmental security and has published numerous books and articles on the topic.
  • Halvard Buhaug is Senior Researcher at the Centre for the Study of Civil War at PRIO. He has worked extensively on geographical aspects of armed conflict with particular focus on the development of disaggregated conflict data and research designs.
  • Clionadh Raleigh is Research Fellow at the Department of Governance, University of Essex. A GIS expert with considerable knowledge on African civil wars, she has established a unique events-based, geo-referenced data collection effort on armed conflict (ACLED).

This Brown Bag Lunch will be chaired by Andrew Norton, Lead Social Development Specialist, Social Development Department.
