Description: The World Bank and First Peoples Worldwide (FPW) held a Roundtable discussion to present the Indigenous Peoples Climate Action Fund (IPCAF). The IPCAF will be managed by FPW, and it will provide direct financing to selected indigenous communities around the world aimed at documenting indigenous responses (both mitigation and adaptation) to climate change and engaging in local, national and international climate change dialogue. The Fund is innovative insofar that it engages directly with IP organizations and communities, and seeks their perspectives on this pressing issue. Indigenous Peoples (IP) account for approximately 300 million people. Traditional Indigenous Peoples livelihoods are typically low-carbon or carbon-neutral. Indigenous Peoples play a fundamental role in the conservation and protection of forests and biological diversity. They protect 22% of the Earth’s surface, 80% of the remaining biodiversity, and 90% of cultural diversity on the planet. Indigenous Peoples are custodians of natural resources critical for carbon sequestration Indigenous Peoples have the smallest ecological footprint and yet are the most severely affected by the adverse effects of climate change due to their dependence upon and close relationship with the environment and its resources.
