Grants for Indigenous Peoples (The information for this resource is based on meetings of grantmakers on the topic of small grants and grants to Indigenous Peoples organized by the World Bank with private and multilateral partners.)  There is increasing interest from donors – bilateral and multilateral agencies and foundations – to support Indigenous Peoples organizations (IPOs) and communities. One of the biggest challenges is how to be an effective and efficient donor to best support the Indigenous Peoples’ communities in a culturally appropriate manner. This also means working within the donors’ own constraints and limitations, such as procedures, regulations and guidelines. Some elements of grantmakers are:  ·        Most grantmakers are interested in supporting those IPOs who articulated broad community support for the project. ·        Grantmakers may or may not accept proposals directly by issuing a call for proposals.  Note that some may not accept unsolicited proposals. ·        Some grantmakers also focus on how the changes resulting from the project at the local level linked to impact at the policy level or how it supported the MDGs. ·        Grantmakers have their own guidelines, deadlines, and priority areas of focus according to themes and geography. ·        When researching grant opportunities and seeking funding, applicants should read guidelines carefully to see if they meet the criteria and area of focus of the grantmaker. ·        Some grant programs have specific focus on IP, others are targeting marginalized groups.  The list below provides a list of grantmakers who provide grants to Indigenous Peoples organizations and issues. Please see the website of the grantmakers for the specific guidelines, for example most grantmakers accept proposals only for specific topics or regions and countries. Some do not accept unsolicited proposals.  The grants are separated according to the Millennium Development Goals.  Grants:  Poverty Reduction  Canadian International Development Agency Indigenous Peoples Partnership Program http://www.acdi-cida.gc.ca/ippp Accepting proposals from Canadian Aboriginal organization in partnership with Indigenous organizations from Latin America and the Caribbean.  Inter-American Foundation http://www.iaf.gov NGOs and CBOs in Latin America and the Caribbean.  International fund for Agricultural Development http://www.ifad.org Grant support to Indigenous Peoples for: ·        securing rights to land, water, natural resources and demarcating indigenous territories; ·        increasing access to markets; ·        enhancing rural micro-enterprises, especially those based on cultural goods and services; ·        rural microfinance, cultural revitalization, women’s capacity building, bi-lingual and intercultural education, ·        documentation of indigenous knowledge and protection of intellectual property rights, strengthening traditional institutions and judicial systems and partnership building.  First Nations Development Institute and First Peoples Worldwide http://www.firstnations.org Invests in assets and abilities of Native communities.  World Bank Development Marketplace www.developmentmarketplace.com Supports seed capital for innovative projects. Has annual country focus.  World Bank Grants Facility for Indigenous Peoples http://www.worldbank.org/indigenous Accepting proposals from Indigenous Peoples Organizations for culturally appropriate development  World Bank Small Grants Program www.worldbank.org/smallgrantsprogram Provides small grants to CSOs through participating World Bank Country Offices for purposes of civic engagement.  Grants: Reduce Child Mortality and Improve Maternal Health  Pan America Health and Education Foundation Small Grants Program www.pahef.org Accepting proposals to improve health of Indigenous Peoples in Latin America and the Caribbean.  Grants: Environmental Sustainability  Global Environment Facility www.gefweb.org Provides grants to NGOs and CBOs in areas of biodiversity, climate change, international waters, sustainable land management, and persistent organic pollutants through community based approaches.  Global Greengrants www.greengrants.org Supports grassroots groups working for environmental justice and sustainability around the world.
