Until recently, data on disability in developing countries has been sparse and of variable quality. Therefore, the UN Statistical Commission charged the Washington Group on Disability Statistics with coming up with census and survey questions to produce high quality, internationally comparable measures of disability. At their most recent meeting, the Group endorsed a set of census questions that have been tested in over 16 countries. Jennifer Madans and Daniel Mont will report on the methodology behind these questions, the results of these tests, and provide examples of how to apply this approach to more extended measures of disability suitable for surveys.
