The conceptualization of disability currently focuses on the interaction of social and environmental factors with impairments. With this framework, society has a responsibility to address barriers that prevent the participation of persons with disabilities. The focus has shifted from fixing individuals to eliminating socially constructed barriers. Disabled people are perceived as active and equal participants of society, contributing to the development process.
Disability thus is a cross cutting issue, much like gender, and information is provided here linking disability to various topic areas, such as Children and Youth, Education, Employment, and HIV/AIDS. Please find more areas on the Left Navigation.
