The World Health Assembly Resolution 58.23 (May 2005), on "Disability, including prevention, management and rehabilitation", requested WHO to produce a World Report on Disability and Rehabilitation based on the best available scientific evidence. WHO is working together with World Bank to jointly produce the report as an underlying principal of the report is the building of partnerships for disability, rehabilitation and inclusion efforts.
A meeting for the preparation of the 1st Joint WHO-World Bank World Report on Disability, Rehabilitation and Inclusion was held on April 11, 2007 at the World Bank Headquarters. Chaired by the new Vice President & Head of the Human Development Network, Joy Phumaphi, Eva Jarawan presented a brief summary of the process used to develop the "World Report on Road Traffic Injury and Prevention," which set the stage for a progress update on the "World Report on Disability, Rehabilitation and Inclusion" by Alana Officer of WHO responsible for coordinating the development of the report. Speakers:Chair: Joy Phumaphi Vice President & Head of Human Development Network, World Bank A Botswana national, Vice President Joy Phumaphi recently joined the Bank following her post as the Assistant Director-General for Family and Community Health, WHO from 2003 to 2007. Her achievements also include serving in Botswana's Parliament and in the Cabinet as Minister for Health. Opening Speaker: Eva Jarawan Sector Manager, Africa Human Development 2, World Bank Ms. Eva Jarawan, Sector Manager, Africa Human Development 2, was on the Editorial Committee of the "World Report on Road Traffic Injury and Prevention". The Report was jointly produced by the World Health Organization and the World Bank. She was at the time a Lead Health Specialist in the MNA and then AFR regions of the Bank, and represented the HNP Group in the World Bank TaskForce on Road Traffic Safety. Key Speaker: Alana Officer Process Manager, Disability and Rehabilitation Team, World Health Organization Ms. Alana Officer is responsible for coordinating the development of the World report on disability and rehabilitation for the World Health Organization. She has been working in health, disability and development for the past 17 years and has held a number of field based technical and managerial positions in Central Africa, Eastern Europe, South Asia and South East Asia. Before joining WHO, Ms. Officer was the Country Director for Handicap International (HI) in India.
