Abstract:

The Millennium Villages Project (MVP) aims to demonstrate a cost-effective strategy to help rural communities in Africa lift themselves out of extreme poverty and achieve the MDGs. A comprehensive package of interventions across agriculture, health and other sectors has been carefully costed to not exceed a total of US$70 per beneficiary in annual donor funding. The project involves a total of 12 Millennium Villages located in the following countries: Ethiopia, Ghana, Kenya, Malawi, Mali, Nigeria, Rwanda, Senegal, Tanzania and Uganda. The study areas were purposively selected to represent each of the agro-ecological zones in Sub-Saharan Africa.

Currently, mental health services are not part of the MVP beneficiary package. However interest in the role of mental health and related morbidity in the overall development process has led the MVP to pilot the integration of mental health services into the comprehensive beneficiary package. This presentation provided a brief overview of the MVP and then described the mental health component in more detail. This component consists of: 1) a Village Health Worker trained and supervised in a basic set of mental health skills focused at case-finding, psychoeducation, morbidity surveillance and the provision of low-tech social/inter personal interventions, 2) the strengthening of village ability to assess and modify mental health responses over time and to link mental health expertise to other sectors, and 3) a network of district, national, and international policymakers and mental health specialist. A rigorous evaluation design was also discussed.
