Communication and Disability

A Modern Approach to Communication Practices on Disability Issues

Moving toward a new paradigm in thinking about disability requires a new way of communicating ideas on the subject. A modern approach to communication is one that promotes the empowerment and inclusion of persons with disabilities. The information that follows aims to provide World Bank staff and communication professionals with the know-how for adopting this new approach to communication and disability.

The World Bank's day-to-day activities can easily incorporate disability communications into its work through the World Bank Communications Network. The Communications Network is the Bank-wide network of communication professionals who handle the daily activities of communicating what the Bank does. These dedicated professionals can communicate the results of the Bank's work on disability, as well as aid in raising awareness of disability issues through traditional tactics such as media relations, internal communications, conferences, and stakeholder consultations, as well as through their own adoption of a modern approach to language usage and perceptions that promote inclusion.
