Cash Transfer Programme for Orphan and Vulnerable Children

Program Profile

Objectives

  • encourage fostering and retention of OVCs within their families and communities and promote their human capital development through regular cash transfers to households living with OVCs

Conditionalities

  • education: school attendance for children 6-17 years
  • health: regular health center visits for immunizations for children 0-1 years and for growth monitoring and vitamin A supplement for children 1-5 years
  • attendance of awareness sessions for adult members

Transfer size

  • Ksh 1,000 (US$13.86) for households with 1-2 OVC, Ksh 2,000 (US$22.72) with 3-4 OVCs, and Ksh 3,000 (US$42.58) with 5 or more OVCs

Frequency of transfer

  • bimonthly

Target population

  • poor households having OVCs 0-17 years as permanent member and not being beneficiaries of other cash transfer programs (applies to direct OVC beneficiaries only, not other household members)
Covered population
  • in the first phase roll out (June-December, 2006) about 7,000 OVCs in seven districts, more after January 2007
