Rising food and food prices impact on many different aspects of human development, for example, poverty, nutrition, education, health and productivity. The human development impacts of rising food and fuel prices may be irreversible and last generations.
In response to these concerns social safety nets are being scaled up, expanded and established to meet changing food and energy requirements across different country and regions. Recognized interventions include direct and indirect transfers, as well as complementary health and education programs.
The World Bank is supporting safety net interventions through the Global Food Crisis Response Program (GFRP), a rapid financing facility that is providing technical advice and access up to $1.2 billion of financial support to countries affected by the food crisis.
To date, disbursements for safety net interventions have been made in 11 countries including Burundi, Central African Republic, Liberia, Madagascar, Sierra Leone, Kyrgyz Republic, Moldova, Tajikistan, Haiti, Djibouti and Yemen.
