The Social Protection Safety Nets Team in the Human Development Network is pleased to sponsor a presentation by

Phillippe G. Leite (HDNSP)
Peter Lanjouw (DECPO)

In December 2008, the Brazilian Statistical Office (IBGE) with technical support from The World Bank (DECPO and HDNSP SSN Team) launched the Brazilian Poverty Map.

The Brazilian Poverty Map was built using the POVMAP methodology developed by the World Bank using the 2003 National representative Household Expenditure Survey and the 2000 Demographic Census.  Instead of providing only local poverty and inequality measures, IBGE has compiled in the same database more than 400 other local level indicators ranging from household infrastructure and population demographics to agriculture production and municipal infrastructure as roads.  The Brazilian Poverty Map had a huge impact on policy dialogue since its launch due to its multi-dimensional view of poverty.  Local politicians now have access to great material that helps them to design more effective social policies.  The federal government is also planning to use it for geographical targeting of existent and new social protection policies.

This seminar will be of interest to anyone – governments, policymakers and practitioners – with interest in similar client-focused piece of analysis and technical assistance; and for those who are interested in analyzing in-depth the multi-dimensional face of poverty in the country.  The Brazilian Poverty Map provides a huge set of information for design, monitoring, and evaluation of policies.

The presenters described the whole process of poverty map production, including the IBGE-WB collaboration, and present some results (maps) available in the "Mapa de Pobreza e Desigualde: Municipios Brasileiros 2003" on DVD.
