The World Bank is now accepting online registration for its core course on  social safety nets: “For Protection and Promotion: the Design and Implementation of Effective Safety Nets” is a two week course aimed at providing participants with an in-depth understanding of the conceptual and practical issues involved in the development of individual safety net programs and full safety net systems that protect poor and vulnerable population groups from income risk, link them to essential social services and help them escape poverty. The course builds on the latest research findings by the World Bank and other academic and research institutions. It considers practical experience from around the world and draws lessons for low-income, middle-income and accession countries.  Participants will have the opportunity to present and discuss challenging social safety net issues in their own country, and work toward solutions with other participants and experts. For more information and to register please enroll here.

On October 3rd the Russian Government signed a US $ 50 million grant with the World Bank to help finance its Rapid Social Response (RSR) Multi-Donor Trust Fund Facility. The RSR helps low-income countries protect their poor and vulnerable citizens from the worst effects of economic crisis by promoting social safety nets, labor market programs that help protect workers, and maintaining key social services in education, health, and nutrition.  The Russian grant, signed by Russian Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister, Alexey Kudrin, and World Bank Group President, Robert Zoellick, will be disbursed into the Trust Fund over the course of the next three years. The RSR program is part of the World Bank’s Vulnerability Financing Facility (VFF), its overall crisis response framework.
