Reliable data and statistics are critical for developing high quality policies with efficient allocation of resources. In the last two decades, transport sector data from low income and many middle income countries have largely been limited and of poor quality. In addition, data from many countries have deteriorated significantly, further complicating secondary data collection. To address these challenges and help meet the high demand for data, the World Bank proposed the Transport Results Initiative. For more information on the efforts of the World Bank and its development partners in gathering transport sector data and statistics, visit our pages on transport results measurement: Global Transport Database In May 2008, World Bank announced Transport Business Strategy for 2008-2012 that defines the strategic direction and process adjustments for the sector. Improving monitoring and evaluation is one of the top priorities in the strategic direction. In this context, Rural Access Index (RAI) and Logistics Performance Index (LPI) have been introduced to measure transport intervention in achieving poverty reduction and economic growth. However there is a great challenge for data collection projects to improve data quality and availability since demands for comparison and benchmarking is rapidly growing. In order to address these issues, transport data and indicator team at the World Bank decided to elaborate a comprehensive global transport database. The efforts for data collection, review and management will be effectively streamlined with new database. |
