Improving Road Safety: from Global Actions to a Chinese Context

On August 17 2011 the World Bank Global Road Safety Facility (GRSF) supported and participated in the 2nd Chinese Overseas Chinese Transportation Association (COTA) – World Bank China Transport Forum held in Nanjing, China (Program - PDF)T. The focus of the Forum this year was on road safety in China and two GRSF presentations concerning the development of a new World Bank engagement strategy for road safety in China were made. The first presentation addressed global directions in road safety (PDF) and an operational framework for the new engagement strategy and the specification of a related large-scale Safe System road safety project. The second presentation addressed the GRSF supported International Road Policing Organization (RoadPOL) and its potential contribution to the new engagement strategy. Following the Forum the GRSF also hosted an informal luncheon with provincial and city representatives of the Ministry of Public Security (MPS) to further discuss the RoadPOL concept and explore ongoing interest MPS interest in engaging with RoadPOL in the context of the proposed Safe System road safety project.
