Facility Global Traffic Safety Police Network Initiative Launched

Begins:   Jul 31, 2007 11:00
Ends:   Jul 31, 2007 15:00

The World Bank Global Road Safety Facility has launched the first phase of a proposed Global Traffic Safety Police Network (GTSPN). With some exceptions, traffic safety law enforcement in low and middle-income countries is systematically weak. There is a need for an accelerated transfer of traffic safety education and enforcement knowledge from high-income law enforcement agencies to their peers in low and middle-income countries.

The GTSPN project aims to assist the efficient and effective implementation of the recommendations of the World Report on Road Traffic Injury Prevention. More specifically, it aims to meet the need for productive engagement with traffic safety law enforcement agencies in pursuit of the road safety objective of UN Resolutions 58/289 and 60/5 (improving global road safety) and World Health Assembly Resolution 57.10 (road safety and health).

This first phase will scope network options through engaging regional police networks, police in potential beneficiary countries, identify candidate pilot projects, and negotiate agreement with stakeholders on a preferred network model. The Facility will periodically update news reports of the progress of the GTSPN.
