Developing CDM project for Municipal Solid Waste Management in Thailand

Begins:   Jan 24, 2008
Ends:   Jan 24, 2008

A workshop aimed at helping Thailand address the steady increase in solid waste generation and, in turn, climate change was held at the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment. More than 70 participants from both the public and private sectors attended this workshop.

Titled Developing CDM project for Municipal Solid Waste Management in Thailand, this workshop was part of the knowledge-sharing series, organized by the World Bank in partnership with the Thai Government. The objective of this workshop is to establish the linkages between solid waste management and climate change.

Recent government data showed that, every year, Thailand generated more than 40,000 tons of waste. Despite the government’s effort to promote it, turning waste into electricity – a normal practice in many developed countries – is still not widely practiced here. This is due to limited technical capacity and capital investment.

Landfill DesignGiven that waste accounts for almost eight per cent of greenhouse gas emissions in Thailand, proper management of solid waste can help the country reduce emissions, earn carbon credit, and contribute to the global solution to global warming.

The World Bank has been supporting municipality solid waste treatment projects, building on our experience on solid waste management in many countries. We have also established a number of carbon funds to support the Clean Development Mechanism under the Kyoto Protocol.
