Ask the Experts - What Drives the Solid Waste Technology Choices by Cities and Private Companies? -- Local energy and materials pricing? Investment climates? Waste characteristics? Regulations?

Sponsor: Sustainable Development Network

Thursday, March 12, 2009
1:30 pm - 5:00 pm

This session provided information and a forum to address participant questions: What are the pros and cons of the various technologies? Should our clients choose incineration with energy recovery, refuse derived fuel pellets, composting, materials recovery plants? How do private service companies like Veolia and Waste Management Inc decide which technology to implement in the plants that they own? Do governments go for one or two technologies, or do they have a mix of technologies? Are there emission differences, or do regulations level the playing field? Can the waste of developing countries support energy recovery? After extensive waste picking in developing countries, is there anything left to burn or recycle in a plant? How do the costs and revenues work out when examined on a holistic basis, when looking at total system costs from collection to end disposal of all residuals?

This session was video taped and will be made availble on this page as soon as possible.
