NCI Charrette System: Collaborative Project Management for Design and Decision Making
Brown Bag Lunch Series
October 20, 2011

This BBL presented an overview of the NCI Charrette System, a collaborative design and planning project management approach that is relevant to any development initiatives. It is currently being introduced as a practical planning tool in the Bank’s Eco2 Cities – Ecological Cities as Economic Cities – Initiative (www.worldbank.org/eco2).

Bill Lennertz, AIA, Executive Director of the National Charrette Institute*, introduced the overview of NCI Charrette System as a design-based, accelerated, collaborative project management system that spans the entire pre-construction period. Further he explained it’s proven, flexible, three-step framework that can be customized for any project. The NCI Charrette System™ is used by public and private planners, designers, architects, developers and community activists to use for:

  • Sustainable community and building design
  • Regional and comprehensive planning
  • Master planning
  • Transportation/infrastructure planning
  • Code/policy writing
  • Development projects

Charrettes can be employed in many development settings, including urban and rural, local and regional, and post-disaster. Recently, the World Bank in Vietnam has adapted a charrette method in a design workshop for greenway corridor and area development in Ho Chi Minh City.

Following to the introduction, 45 minutes discussions were held with Bill and Stephanie Bothwell, asla cnu, the National Charrette Institute faculty, and principal of Stephanie Bothwell Urban and Landscape Design.

*The National Charrette Institute (NCI) is a nonprofit educational and research institution. NCI helps people build community capacity for collaboration to create healthy community plans. NCI teaches professionals and community leaders the art and science of the NCI Charrette System™(http://www.charretteinstitute.org/ ).
