Learning Day Creating Jobs by Supporting Historic Cities, Cultural Heritage and Sustainable Tourism
Thursday, March 1, 2012 8:00am-12:30pm This event featured presentations from external speakers, private sector representatives, and economists having systematized heritage economics frameworks, as well as Bank staff presenting projects that demonstrate how these frameworks are reflected in Bank operations. The session demonstrated how the Bank’s investment projects supporting urban regeneration, historic city conservation, and sustainable tourism development promote the adaptive reuse of built assets and are consistent with the green growth agenda. These projects provide the enabling environment for job creation and private sector development by reusing existing assets, keeping in situ what literature defines as embodied energy, and promoting, in this growing Bank’s niche of business, a development model that minimizes carbon emissions while creating new jobs. | Opening Remarks | Ms. Abha Joshi-Ghani, Urban Sector Manager, Urban Development and Local Government Unit, World Bank | | Keynote Address | Mr. John O'Brien, Chief Risk Officer, Ireland's Industrial Development Agency | | Outcome of Urban Regeneration Program in Washington DC Outcome of Urban Regeneration Program in Washington DC | Ms. Valerie Santos, Senior Urban Specialist, LAC, World Bank | | Heritage at Work!
