This reference manual highlights the potential contribution of sound urban-environment management to both environmental and development goals.  It stresses how urban environmental problems can be addressed  to contribute to poverty reduction and emphasizes how good practices in environmental management can bring about important transformation in urban services provision.  

"Defining an Ecosystem Approach to Urban Management and Policy Development". United Nations University, Institute for Advanced Studies.  (2003).  

This is a policy brief presented at the Capacity Development and Scoping Workshop in Tokyo.   The report is based on work conducted at the Institute in collaboration with the UNESCO and the WHO.  The document sets forth an ecosystems vision of city management and policy development and provides groundwork for future studies and assessments on urban ecosystems. 

"First Phase Strategic Research on Urban Environmental Management". Institute for Global Environmental Strategies.  Institute for Global Environmental Strategies. ( 2001). 

This report is presented as the result of a three-year project about the status and change of the Urban Environment in Asia.  The report gives an introduction of the Urbanization process in East Asia, then synthesizes the results of the project (includes comparative and case studies looking at major Asian cities) and finalizes with an evaluation of the project and further recommendations. 

"The urban environment"  World Resources Institute, United Nations Environment Programme, United Nations Development Programme, and the World Bank.   

The World Resources Institute (WRI), a non-profit organization works as a think tank promoting research, implementing projects and decision-making to protect the environment and improves humankind's lives.  The WRI has a general publication regarding policy strategies and analysis of a comprehensive set of variable related to urban environmental management The report establishes linkages between urban environment and health issues, transportation,  land use, natural resources, and air pollution among others; it also provides data about cases studied in Africa, Indonesia, India and Mexico City.

In addition to this previous paper, the Sustainable Development Department from the Inter-American Development Bank and through its Urban Environment and Pollution Control Department studies urban environmental problems in Latin American and Caribbean cities.  This linkoffers other papers on Urban Environmental Management and Environmental Policy.

Urbanet(The Network for Regionalization, Decentralization and Municipal Development), a project sponsored by the GTZ, promotes the exchange of knowledge and information, interdisciplinary cooperation among actors in municipal and urban development.   It provides links to Events,Documents,Training Materialsand other organizations working in Urban Development issues.    This website has a database with articles, reports and literature on projects related to urban development. (tip: search under Keywords i.e. 'Waste', 'Sanitation').

The Global Development Research Center, an internet-based organization for knowledge sharing carries out initiatives in education, research and practice, in the spheres of environment, urban issues, community, economy and information The Center provides a source for articles, reports, and bibliographies on Urban Environmental Managementissues and related topics through policy frameworks, cases and articles on Urban Environmental Technologies.

The following linkprovides a database developed by the International Environmental Technology Centre(IETC)  that offers a set of publications (some available online) related to Urban Environment and Environmental Management in general.  It covers issues such as Urban Waste Management, Water Management, Sustainable Development, Environmental Technologies.  The search can be narrowed by topic i.e. 'Waste' to obtain related publications.

Globenet, an internet-based association, under the Urban Popular Environmental Economy Programhas compiled a list of documents relevant to the urban environment that includes: policy and official documentsand analysis and recommendations(excerpts from documents).  Documents can be found in English, French and Spanish.
