The Cities Environment Reports on the Internet  (CEROI) program works within the framework of Local Agenda 21 to facilitate access to environmental information for sound decision-making and general awareness-raising in cities. The pilot phase of the project has been supported by UNEP and the Norwegian Industrial and Regional Development Fund. Useful information can be found through the Indicators Encyclopedia, and Indicators Resources. CEROI also offers a report on Indicators for Waste in the context of the city of Durban. It provides information about the framework and indicators used to approach this urban environmental pillar.

The United Nations Commission on Human Settlements (UNCHS), based on the Habitat Agenda, has developed the Global Urban Indicators system, which contains a set of key measures that can provide a comprehensive picture and a comparative base for the condition of cities in progress towards achieving sustainable urban objectives. The indicators presented help measure performances and trends in selected key areas by the project and to measure progress in the implementation of the Habitat Agenda.

Publications & Reports (Guides)

The following guide is a companion document to the previous Global Urban Indicators toolkit designed for reporting on progress in the implementation of the Habitat Agenda. The Indicators Toolkit is a user-friendly spreadsheet for collecting and analyzing a minimum data set composed of 23 key urban indicators and 9 qualitative data sub-sets for the Istanbul +5 assessment. The Theme Indicator Framework from the UN Division for Sustainable Development presents a core set of indicators and methodology sheets. This set has been tested as part of the implementation of the Work Program on Indicators of Sustainable Development adopted by the UN Commission on Sustainable Development. Relevant indicators to the urban environment include: Indicators on Urbanization, Sanitation, and Waste Generation and Management (tip: look under sub-themes for these topics).
