This paper discusses the general framework that the OECD and its member countries established for developing indicators as a tool for performance evaluation and public information. In the document, the Core Environmental Indicators cover major environmental issues; Sectorial Environmental Indicators focus on specific sectors (e.g. transport, energy) and key environmental indicators are drawn from the core set.

The Institute for Global Environmental Strategies through its Kitakyushu Initiative conducted a comprehensive assessment of the state of the environment and sustainable development policies in the region (Asia&Pacific). It provides links to successful practice databases, which include reports on indicators for urban environmental sustainability and analyses and information on best practices/case studies of environmental improvement efforts in the Asia-Pacific region including Japan, China, Pakistan, Indonesia and Korea.
A core set of national environmental indicators sponsored by the New Zealand Ministry for the Environment has developed a framework and methodology to monitor and evaluate indicators as well as to identify the state of the New Zealand environment while providing a tool for environmental decision and policy makers.
