ASEAN Economic Forum – Research Project on Trade in Services

Countries of the Association of South East Asian Nations (ASEAN) are engaged in international trade negotiations in a variety of forums.  Governments that are members of the WTO participate in the multilateral Doha Development Agenda (DDA).  Laos and Vietnam are in the process of negotiating accession to the WTO.  All ASEAN countries negotiate services under the ASEAN Framework Agreement on Services (AFAS) and additional negotiations have been launched between ASEAN and other Asian countries (e.g., China, India).  Moreover, individual countries are engaged in bilateral negotiations with countries outside the region (e.g., Malaysia, Singapore, and Thailand).

Effective participation in these negotiations requires that governments are well-informed about own export interests and the implications of opening service markets to foreign competition.  The World Bank Institute is supporting the ASEAN Economic Forum—a group of economic researchers from the ASEAN region—to strengthen the analytical foundation on which policymakers can base the negotiation of international trade commitments.

This website serves to disseminate presentations, studies and other research output generated in the course of the research project.  It will be updated regularly as new material becomes available.
