Geneva Office

 What we do

The Geneva Office seeks to participate in global policy debates and to strengthen partnerships with policymakers in areas where the Bank has an active role.   Target constituencies are the more than 150 country delegations based there and the Geneva-based multilateral development agencies, including UN Specialized Agencies and the WTO, as well as civil society groups.

Thematically, the office’s activities fall into seven “issue dialogues” which are institutionally represented in Geneva:   trade, health, migration, labor, fragile states, human rights, and climate change.

The work in trade is done with the WTO along with UNCTAD, ITC, UNDP, WIPO, and several private groups. The Geneva  office:

  • monitors key developments in the current round of trade negotiations,
  • assesses the potential implications for country constituents,
  • communicates the Bank's analysis on critical issues in five areas of trade policy:
  • liaises with agencies producing data as a global public good.

 The Geneva Office Team

The Geneva office is headed by  Richard Newfarmer,  Special Representative to the UN and the WTO.  He is supported by Patrick Reichenmiller, Policy Analyst for UN and WTO Affairs, an ETC Economist from PREM working primarily on trade, andIsabelle Taylor, Executive Assistant. Staff from the Geneva office regularly participate in meetings held by the UN and the WTO and maintain a close working relationship with diplomats and international civil servants from the Geneva development community on issues of relevance to the Bank’s poverty reduction mandate.

The Office produces two regular reports:

  • the  Geneva Trade Update which summarizes major trade events, particularly in the WTO round, (available internally) and
  • the Geneva Monthly Report, which summarizes the office’s multiple activities for the month.
