This World Bank Institute (WBI) learning program explores obstacles faced by poor artisan-entrepreneurs, who are often non-literate, rural women—trying to earn a living producing and marketing traditional crafts.

Escuchen Nuestras Voces - Los Pobres Hablan sobre la Pobreza explora las complejidades de la pobreza desde la perspectiva de los mismos pobres. Revela que a pesar de que las experiencias de la gente pobre varían mucho dependiendo de su ubicación y situación, existe un común denominador en la forma en que ellos describen sus vidas: falta de poder y de voz; una manera precaria de ganarse la vida y falta de seguridad; aislamiento, humillación e inhabilidad de conectarse con los recursos y las oportunidades; y desigualdad de los sexos. El resultado es un "efecto de dominó" de desventajas y desigualdades lo que le dificulta a los pobres escapar de las garras de la pobreza.

Informe sobre el Desarrollo Mundial 2000/2001: Lucha contra la Pobreza
El Informe busca una comprensión mas amplia de la pobreza y sus causas. Sostiene que es posible reducir la pobreza en forma considerable, pero lograrlo requiere un planteamiento más amplio que aborde directamente las necesidades de los pobres en tres áreas importantes: oportunidad, empoderamiento y seguridad. El estudio -la investigación más detallada jamás realizada por el Banco sobre la pobreza en el mundo- insiste también en que el crecimiento económico es fundamental pero muchas veces no suficiente para crear las condiciones en que la población más pobre del mundo pueda mejorar sus condiciones de vida.

Participatory Monitoring and Evaluation (PME): A One-day Learning and Exchange Workshop
This website provides a reference tool for dissemination of the Participatory Monitoring and Evaluation (PME) learning workshop agenda and materials presented at the workshop (April 19, 2002). This learning workshop was designed to familiarize participants with PME approaches and case examples in context of investment lending/ CDD, PRSP, and public sector reform. It was also designed to strengthen the capacity of participants to initiate and assess practical applications of PME.

Toolkit for Evaluating the Poverty and Distributional Impact of Economic Policies
The World Bank group has been working and collaborating with countries, academic researchers, aid agencies and NGOs to build and test various techniques and tools that evaluate the poverty and distributional impact of economic policy choices. This Toolkit (TK) website assembles best practices and a description of the most robust available techniques and tools for Poverty and Social Impact Analysis or PSIA. The site reviews available methods applicable to various situations and policy fields, from the simplest, e.g., partial equilibrium effect of a tax change, to the most complex ones like for instance the general equilibrium effects of a change in foreign trade policy. In some cases, software is also made available.

Social Development Initiative for South East Europe
This regional initiative aims to provide the Governments of South East Europe, the donor community involved in the region, and in particular the World Bank, with the capacity to carry out social analyses, promote institution building, and launch pilot projects to address inter-ethnic tensions and social cohesion issues in South East Europe.
