The Government of Malawi took a bold step in pursuing its commitment to improving governance and fighting corruption by implementing a Governance and Anti-Corruption diagnostic in 2005. Executed independently and with support from the United Kingdom’s Department for International Development (DfID), the diagnostic results will serve as a major input into the design of a governance action plan.Â
In 2006 the Malawi Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB), which independently executed the diagnostic, requested assistance from WBI in the results dissemination and action planning process. Together with the Bank’s Human Resources team and DfID WBI has worked to provide support to the Malawi ACB and its partners in designing national and regional workshops where civil society can learn about the survey outcomes and provide feedback into plans for reform actions. The national and regional workshops were completed in February 2007 and a draft action plan is expected in late Spring 2007. Questionnaires The tools used for the Malawi governance diagnostic were based on instruments developed by WBI but adapted by the Malawi Anti-Corruption Bureau to the country context and priorities. Final Reports The Malawi Anti-Corruption Bureau completed the data analysis and results report in 2006. The report highlights the priority areas for governance action and provides a baseline for future monitoring of governance performance. On February 5, 2007 the President and several high ranking ministers launched the public dissemination of the reports findings in a public session. A Draft Action Plan is forthcoming.
