Overview | JJ/WBGSP Scaling-Up Regional Conferences, May 2006 | Abstracts of Scholar Master Thesis of Partnership Universities Overview In 2005, the Bank launched the Scaling-Up Program for JJ/WBGSP to better leverage the new knowledge generated by the scholars and foster a network of our community. It aims to facilitate life-long knowledge exchange and also to create viable dialogue between development practitioners and scholars. The Scaling-Up Program currently works in cooperation with the partnership universities to carry out the following activities: - Capturing knowledge
- To capture new knowledge and insights developed by scholars, the partnership universities are requested to submit their best research papers written by their scholars for the program years of 2004/2005. The World Bank will review the papers and select the ones that meet the identified requirements for high quality to be published.
- Promoting knowledge
- The scholars whose research papers are selected will be invited to the regional conferences, to share their research work with the professionals including the World Bank staff from Headquarters and the country office, the Japanese government officials, and the program alumni.
- Workshops and brown bag lunches are organized at the Bank’s HQ, where JJ/WBGSP interns at the World Bank and IMF interact with development professionals.
- Alumni will be provided with opportunities to register and attend WBI’s short courses and forum, either via electronically through web or in person as appropriate.
- Building an active network
- Face-to-face interaction at the regional conferences will foster a network among the current scholars, alumni, and beyond. (All scholars, both from the partnership programs and the regular programs are invited.)
- The Program supports enhancing Discussion Forums and Program Roster, which are already in active operation.
Fiscal Year 2006 is the first year for the Scaling-Up Program, and we are starting only with the partnership universities for many of the scaling-up activities. In the future, more activities will be open to the scholars in the regular programs as we gain experience. This fiscal year, the Joint Japan-World Bank Graduate Scholarship Program (JJ/WBGSP) administered by the World Bank Institute, held two regional conferences, in Nairobi and in Hanoi, where the alumni were brought together to discuss development issues, including presentations by scholars judged to have produced outstanding papers. These conferences established a solid framework for the graduated scholars to share knowledge and establish links with development practitioners including the Bank’s country offices and the Japanese Embassies. The conferences proved to be a huge success among the alumni as it enabled them to network and participate in discussions on current development issues.
