E-Learning

E-learning refers to the use of computer-based electronic technologies of Internet, e-mail, websites and CD-ROMs, and their applications, to deliver, facilitate and enhance both formal and informal learning and knowledge sharing at any time, any place and at any pace.

A Virtual Learning Environment (VLE) is an Internet-based application facilitating the creation of virtual communities that can share ideas, conduct discussions, and collaborate on projects, without having to physically be in the same room. All that is required to participate is a computer and on-line access from anywhere in the world.

Generally, CESI initiates VLEs based on workshops or specific topics. This way, participants/practitioners, as well as other interested parties, are able to engage in activities such as discussing the workshops; exchanging opinions about future developments; sharing ideas for the implementation of specific policies; or communicating their programs' progress.

Also, the VLE is a great opportunity to access workshop materials and information on related topics. Many documents such as presentations and articles are available, as well as lists of additional on-line resources with links to other sites.
There are three major components to the VLE:

  • Resource Materials: Participants can acquire information by reading through the resources uploaded to the VLE. For instance, all the materials available concerning a particular workshop can be found.
  • Communications: The VLE offers tools that enable registered participants to consult one another and to exchange information and opinions online. Participants can post documents, and others can respond to them, thus forming a discussion thread. To that end, tools such as Bulletin Board, E-Mail, File Sharing, Discussion Forum, or Virtual Classroom are available. The communication tools stand in for the face-to-face interaction that would be gained from 'normal' learning environments.
  • Administrative Functionality: Registered participants are encouraged to post information about themselves and their work and are able to view information about other participants.
