The story of this book starts in September 2007, when the Disaster Management Research and Implementation Center and the Society and the Science Center of the Middle East Technical University, jointly launched a painting contest with support from WBI Disaster Management Program. The initiative aimed at promoting disaster risk reduction awareness of the youth attending the sixth to eleventh grades in provinces heavily hit by the 1999 Marmara Duzce Earthquakes in Bolu, Duzce, Sakarya Kocaeli and Yalova. The theme of the contest was “Surviving Disasters: Reducing Earthquake Damage.” The contestants were asked to submit paintings along with short statements to explain their work. More than 200 contestants have participated from 40 schools. This book showcases some of the artworks submitted by contestants accompanied by the young artists statements. The publication is bilingual (English and Turkish). While the images reflect the children’s horrifying experiences they also carry a positive message that we are not helpless against natural perils.
