This program provides capacity building for local-level participants in monitoring and compliance with environmental laws and regulations. The objective of the program is to promote development by strengthening environmental monitoring and compliance in Egypt at the Governorate level. Special areas of focus for this training program include: water and air quality; the role of women in environmental monitoring and compliance; empowering women at the local level to participate fully in the process; and decentralization of environmental management and functions. The program assists local NGOs and women groups in monitoring mechanisms to strengthen compliance and the local level.
Two pilot workshops were delivered by the Association for the Protection of the Environment (APE) in Sohag and Qena, Upper Egypt in October 2003, and one in Menia, Upper Egypt on December 2-6, 2003.
The follow-up workshops, administered by the Association for the Protection of the Environment (APE), included useful demonstrations of waste-recycling. APE is currently coordinating creative schemes to use recycled waste for various income generating activities, such as composting and producing paper products. Several brochures were prepared, along with a 10 minute promotional video to be broadcast around the country.
