Solid Waste Management (SWM)

The World Bank Institute’s Environmentally and Socially Sustainable Development Division is working on a training and knowledge sharing program focusing on developing the capacity of governments at national, provincial and local levels to provide adequate solid waste management systems that are socially, economically and environmentally sustainable in the long-run.

This program promotes the strengthening of national and regional networks of solid waste institutions and practitioners and prepares highly interactive learning modules on solid waste management, highlighting operational, institutional, environmental and financial aspects. It also helps to establish certification programs that are managed and delivered through local institutions and expertise, and provides technical assistance to institutions that deliver capacity building activities.

The main goals of the program are to:

  1. Understand the key issues involved in solid waste management from a governance, infrastructure, public health, social, and environmental perspective;
  2. Consolidate the vast existing knowledge, materials, and other resources in a comprehensive and easily accessible manner;
  3. Prepare highly interactive training materials that can be adapted by local institutions and used for certification purposes of government officials and practitioners in targeted countries;
  4. Build the capacity of local training institutes and specialist to deliver training courses with support from the World Bank and other international institutions; and,
  5. Facilitate networking and exchange of information between solid waste managers, operators, industries and consultants at the national, regional, and local levels.
